How can I purge trapped air from my floor jack after changing the oil in Detroit

Whether you’re prepping your vehicle for a harsh Detroit winter or doing routine maintenance in your garage, changing your floor jack’s hydraulic oil often introduces trapped air into the lines. Air compresses under load, leaving your jack feeling spongy, lifting slowly, or failing to reach its full height.

Purging (bleeding) the trapped air restores proper hydraulic pressure so your jack operates at peak performance.

Step-by-Step: Bleeding Air from Your Floor Jack

  • Lower the Saddle Fully: Turn the release valve counterclockwise using the handle to ensure the lifting arm is completely retracted.
  • Locate and Open the Fill Plug: Remove the metal cover plate if present, clean around the rubber fill plug on the main cylinder reservoir, and gently pry or unscrew it to release internal pressure.
  • Pump the Handle with Valve Open: Keep the release valve open (counterclockwise) and rapidly pump the handle 10 to 15 times. This circulates oil and forces air out through the open fill port without building lifting pressure.
  • Close the Release Valve & Lift: Turn the release valve clockwise until snug. Pump the handle until the saddle reaches its maximum height.
  • Release Pressure Under Load: Re-open the release valve slowly and let the arm collapse under its own weight.
  • Recheck Fluid Level & Seal: Top off with standard hydraulic jack oil if necessary (about 1/8 inch below the hole rim), press the rubber plug securely back into place, and wipe down the reservoir.

Safety & Local Resources

Critical Safety Risk

Always perform maintenance on a flat, solid surface and never place any body part under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack. Always use properly rated jack stands before getting underneath.
