Working on your vehicle in Houston heat is tough enough without dealing with a faulty floor jack. If your hydraulic floor jack pumps repeatedly but fails to reach its full lifting height, don’t throw it out just yet. High humidity, temperature swings, and trapped air often cause hydraulic issues that are simple to fix at home.
3 Quick Steps to Fix Your Floor Jack
1. Bleed the Trapped Air
Air bubbles trapped inside the hydraulic system prevent pressure from building up, keeping your jack from reaching maximum extension.
- Open the release valve: Turn the handle counterclockwise.
- Pump the handle: Rapidly pump the handle 10 to 15 times while the valve is open to push air out.
- Close the valve: Tighten the release valve and test the lift height.
2. Check and Top Off the Hydraulic Oil
Low oil levels are a leading cause of partial lifting height.
- Set the jack on a flat surface in a well-ventilated garage.
- Locate the rubber oil fill plug on the main reservoir cylinder.
- Remove the plug and check if the oil level rests just below the hole rim.
- Fill using high-grade hydraulic jack oil—never use brake fluid or engine oil, as they damage internal rubber seals.
3. Clean the Release Valve & Replace Worn O-Rings
Dirt and debris from dusty Houston driveways can lodge in the release valve mechanism, causing pressure leaks. Wipe down the valve assembly and inspect internal O-rings for cracking or tears.
